The area known as The Fakfak Region actually consists of a large portion of southern Irian Jaya. The final islands in the southern Raja Ampat island group known as Misool are where the Fakfak region starts. The islands included in this group would be the Pisang islands following the south Irian Jaya coastline all the way down past Kaimana through Triton Bay area.

This area has now been proven by Dr. Gerry Allen to be the world’s richest spot, not only biodiversity, also bio-mass - yes that means lots of fish! The area has the richest soft coral growth ever seen, though hard coral species is fairly limited in comparison to many other parts of Indonesia.

A part of this region is already under the wing of Conservation International who are now in the process of making this area a National Park. The area could very well gain National Park very quickly!
