Comment from Richard Willan: Presently believed to be endemic to the warmer waters of the Cape Province, South Africa. Externally this species is indistinguishable from the widespread Indo-Pacific Philinopsis cyanea (= Philinopsis speciosa), but details of the male reproductive system are said to differ.
