This name is used with some uncertainty as the Chromodoris reticulata species group has yet to be monographed. This colour form seems unique to Hawaii.Comment from Richard Willan on photo #1679
Fortunately the foot is visible in this picture because it bears the large mid-dorsal blotch, which is distinctive and characteristic for this species and not for the similar-looking Chromodoris reticulata.Comment from Richard Willan on photo #2208
A nice photo showing a typical individual. Note the orange marginal band and relatively few gills. The top of the tail would have had a large coloured spot just on the area hidden by the mantle. I like your idea of including similar looking species on the same page as the main species – in this case Chromodoris albopunctata and Chromodoris reticulata.

Chromodoris reticulata has more than 14 gills and no rows of blood-red spots on the outer flanks of the mantle that are possessed by the real Chromodoris tinctoria.
