The tiny papillae (called caryophyllidia) all over the surface of the mantle have a very elaborate and characteristic microscopic structure – a tiny central papilla protected by a crown of spicules emerging above the skin of the mantle. These structures must have some sensory function, but what they sense and why they need to be distributed all over the mantle is unknown.Comment from Richard Willan on photo #2981
