Look very carefully at the tips of the cerata, especially the biggest (white-tipped) ones close to the midline, and you will see they are coiled tightly inwards like young fern fronds. The uncoil rapidly and wave around when the individual is disturbed.

A typical individual in a ‘relaxed’ posture. Note the cerata with the white tips closest to the midline are tightly coiled like watch springs. When an animal is irritated these cerata are rapidly uncoiled and waved about vigorously for defense.
