This is really similar to a specimen I have, also from the Maldives. The black patter forms a horse-shoe shape around the rhinophores, the inner margins straight and the outer scalloped. there is a central black line connecting anteriorly to the other.
Although I cannot see the orange border, the pattern of black lines and the granular white areas are characteristic of Phyllidia exquisita
. Let's see more specimens?
Note the gold marginal band around the mantle (of which a tiny piece is showing mid-anteriorly).
You can just about see the yellow margin anteriorly. The black scalloped pattern is also indicative.
I saw one of these at Pohnpei that I identified as a young Phyllidia exquisita
It retains the orange margin anteriorly, but no pigment on the secondary large tubercles.
I am sure this photo is the first record of Phyllidia exquisita
I don’t think this is Phyllidia coelestis
. It may be Phyllidia exquisita
It is very difficult to decide what to call this particular Phyllidia because it has characters of several different species. So I’m quite comfortable with you changing its identification to Phyllidia exquisita
(because of the white granules in the skin). It is definitely better to call it either Phyllidia exquisita
, or Phyllidia ocellata
, rather than only Phyllidia sp.
An atypical individual without any gold marginal band.
The individual is hunched up, but it can be identified as Phyllidia exquisita
by the orange border to the mantle (a small section is visible just in front of the rhinophores) and the numerous microscopic white specks all over the surface of the mantle.
This individual is an example of the rarest colour form of this species – one with no golden band, or even golden dashes, at the edge of the mantle.
